A 53.5mm stainless steel puck screen, 1.7mm thick, for every Sage and Breville machine with a 54mm portafilter: Barista Express, Barista Express Impress, Barista Pro, Barista Touch, Barista Touch Impress, Bambino, Bambino Plus, Infuser and Duo Temp Pro. It sits on top of the tamped coffee, spreads the water arriving from the shower screen, and keeps coffee off the shower screen so the group head stays cleaner. Reusable: rinse it after each shot.

Why 53.5mm for a 54mm machine
The 54mm figure is the portafilter. The inside of the basket is a fraction narrower, so a screen that sits on the coffee has to be a little smaller. A true 54mm screen catches on the rim. 53.3mm screens fit too: 53.3mm or 53.5mm, the difference explained.

Using it
Lay it on the coffee after tamping. Because it takes some of the space above the coffee, start with your usual dose minus about half a gram. If the spent puck shows the imprint of the shower screen, take off another half gram; if the shot then runs faster, grind one step finer. It makes the most difference with a single wall basket; on a dual wall (pressurised) basket it changes very little. It does not stop channelling on its own: stirring the grounds before tamping does more. Our puck screen guide covers all of this.
Questions we get asked
Does it work on the Barista Express Impress? Yes. Put it on after the machine has tamped, never before. More in our Impress guide.
Does it fit a bottomless portafilter? Yes, it sits in any 54mm Sage or Breville basket, spouted or bottomless. Both together cost less in the portafilter and puck screen set.
What else fits the 54mm range? Every size, from baskets to tampers, is in our basket and tamper size guide.
