Almost every Sage and Breville espresso machine sold to the home takes a 54mm portafilter. The exceptions are the Dual Boiler and the Oracle range, which take 58mm. If your machine is a Barista Express, a Barista Pro, a Barista Touch, a Bambino, an Infuser or a Duo Temp Pro, it is 54mm, and every accessory we sell fits it.
Below is the full list, with the model codes printed on the machine. We publish both sides of it, including the machines our accessories do not fit, because the point of a size guide is to stop you buying the wrong part.

The letters in front change with the market, not the machine. Sage sells into the UK and Europe, Breville into the US and Australia, and the same machine can carry a BES code, an SES code, or a suffix such as BSS, XL or SST for the finish. The number is what matters. A BES870 and an SES875 take the same 54mm portafilter.
Sage and Breville machines that take a 58mm portafilter
These are the prosumer machines. Our 54mm accessories do not fit them, and no adapter exists, because the portafilter locks into a group head machined for one diameter.
| Machine | Model codes |

| Oracle | BES980, SES980 |
| Oracle Jet | BES985, SES985 |

| Oracle Dual Boiler | BES995, SES995 |
How to check your own machine in ten seconds
You do not need the manual, and you do not need to measure the portafilter itself.
- Lift the filter basket out of your portafilter.
- Measure straight across the top rim with a ruler.
- A basket that measures about 54mm across is a 54mm machine. About 58mm, and it is the Dual Boiler or Oracle family.
The model code is also printed on a silver sticker underneath the machine, and on the side of the box. Tip the machine gently forward rather than turning it over, so the water tank stays put.
Why a 54mm portafilter takes a 53.5mm puck screen
This one catches people out. A 54mm portafilter takes a puck screen of about 53.5mm, not 54mm. The screen has to drop cleanly onto the coffee bed inside the basket, and the basket wall is a fraction narrower than the portafilter it sits in. A screen cut to a true 54mm binds on the rim, sits proud of the coffee, and channels the water around its edge instead of through the puck.
The same logic applies to thickness. A screen of about 1.7mm holds its shape under nine bars and stays flat after a hundred cycles. Thinner screens dish in the middle, and a dished screen puts the water where the coffee is shallowest.

Before anything else, check which basket you are using
Your machine came with four baskets, two single wall and two dual wall, and which one is fitted changes almost everything downstream. A dual wall basket makes the pressure itself, through a single small hole, so a bottomless portafilter would show you that hole rather than your coffee. Our guide to Sage baskets explains how to tell them apart in five seconds, and why the most useful change available to you is probably free.
Once it fits, if the shot sprays
A bottomless portafilter shows you things a spouted one hides, and the first thing most people see is espresso firing out sideways. That is channelling, and it is fixable. Our guide to why espresso sprays explains what each pattern means and the fixes in the order that works, starting with the one that costs nothing.
Still not sure
Email contact@cremalab.co.uk with the model code from the sticker under your machine and we will tell you which size you have. If an accessory arrives and does not fit the machine listed on its product page, the return is free and we pay the postage, which is set out in full on our returns page.
