A 54mm coffee distributor for Sage and Breville machines: its 53mm base levels the coffee in a 54mm portafilter before you tamp. Fits the Barista Express, Barista Pro, Barista Touch, Bambino, Bambino Plus, Infuser and Duo Temp Pro. Rest it on the dosed basket and turn it a few times: three angled slopes push the grounds into the gaps and leave a flat, even bed, so the tamp goes down level and the water finds fewer easy paths through the coffee. The depth is adjustable, so it suits different doses and baskets.

Why 53mm for a 54mm machine
The 54mm figure is the portafilter. The basket inside it is a little narrower, so anything that goes into the coffee (a tamper, a puck screen or a distributor) has to be smaller. A 53mm base sits inside the basket with a small gap all round; a base that really measured 54mm would not go in. Our basket and tamper size guide has every number for the 54mm range, and our distributor guide explains when one is worth having.
Fits these machines
- Barista Express: BES870, SES875, BES860
- Barista Pro: BES878, SES878
- Barista Touch: BES880, SES880
- Bambino: BES450, SES450
- Bambino Plus: BES500, SES500

- Duo Temp Pro: BES810, SES810
Not needed on the Barista Express Impress (BES876, SES876) and Barista Touch Impress (BES881, SES881): they tamp the coffee straight after grinding, in the same cradle, so a distributor adds little. Does not fit the Dual Boiler or the Oracle range, including the Oracle Jet, which take 58mm. Our portafilter size guide shows how to check your machine in ten seconds.
What it helps with, and what it does not
It helps when the coffee lands in a mound or piles up on one side, which the built-in Sage grinders often do, and when shots run faster on one side or spray from a bottomless portafilter. It gives you the same flat bed every time, so you can change one thing at a time and see what it does. It does not break up clumps deep in the basket: stirring the dry grounds with a fine needle (WDT) does that better, and the two work well together. It will not fix stale beans or a grind that is too coarse, and with a dual wall (pressurised) basket it makes very little difference.
How to use it on a Sage
- Grind your usual dose into the basket.
- Rest the distributor on top and twist the body until the slopes just reach into the coffee. Start shallow: you can always go deeper.
- Turn it two or three times, lift it straight up and check that the surface is flat.
- Tamp level with your usual tamper. Once the depth suits your dose and basket, leave it set.
Questions we get asked
Does it work with a bottomless portafilter? Yes. It goes into any 54mm Sage or Breville basket, spouted or bottomless, and our bottomless portafilter shows straight away whether the bed was level.
Can I use it with a puck screen? Yes: distribute, tamp, then lay the 53.5mm puck screen on top.
Does it replace my tamper? Set deep, it presses the coffee lightly, but it is not a tamper. Tamp after it, especially on a Sage where the dose and basket often change.
Distributor or WDT tool? A WDT tool stirs the grounds and breaks up clumps; a distributor flattens the top. If your grinder makes clumps, stirring matters most, and the distributor then gives you a level finish. Our channelling guide explains why shots run unevenly.
