Because it takes some of the space above the coffee, start with your usual dose minus about half a gram. If the spent puck shows the imprint of the shower screen, take off another half gram; if the shot then runs faster, grind one step finer. It makes the most difference with a single wall basket; on a dual wall (pressurised) basket it changes very little. It does not stop channelling on its own: stirring the grounds before tamping does more.
